History

What Does This? A 4-year-old Labrador Retriever with persistent vomiting, partially responsive to Cerenia?
Case presented by Eric Lindquist DMV (Italy) DABVP & clinically managed by Chris Stancel DVM & staff at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital, Ridgewood, NJ, USA.

Sonogram: Dale

History: (Kathy Weider RVT): A 4-year-old MN Labrador retriever (Image 1) was presented for vomiting food and bile over the prior 5 days. The owner reported no potential for foreign body consumption. Physical exam revealed mild dehydration, depression, excessive panting, mild tender cranial abdomen, and slightly slow capillary refill time (2 seconds). Blood analysis was normal except for minor anemia and slight albumin elevation. Radiographs were uneventful. The patient responded slightly to IV fluid support and cerenia and only vomited once with minimal appetite.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

(Remo Lobetti BVSc, MMedVet, PhD, DECVIM): Upper GIT obstruction - foreign body/neoplasia Gastric ulceration Pancreatitis Focal peritonitis

Image Interpretation

(Lindquist DMV, DABVP)

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

(Lindquist DMV, DABVP): Foreign body obstruction of the descending duodenum.

Outcome

Dale feeling guilty about stealing the nipple from his 2-legged sibling.“I won’t do it again Mom, I promise!” Dale recovered uneventfully from surgery.
